DESCRIPTION:Celebrating the Cultural Renaissance of the Roycrofters at Large: Fifty Years of RALA\nOct 9\, 2026 — Mar 28\, 2027\n\nThe Burchfield Penney Art Center presents Fifty Years of RALA\, opening on M&T Second Friday\, October 9th\, 2026\, marking the 50th anniversary of the Roycrofters-At-Large Association (RALA) with work by current and former Roycroft Renaissance artisans. The exhibition runs through March 28\, 2027. \nThe exhibition features 28 artisans\, including several cross-media collaborations in the tradition of the original Roycroft workshops. Featured artists include: Greg Adams\, Tom Bojanowski\, Denise Brucato\, Tom Ciminelli\, Lee Davenport\, Gordon Galloway\, Frank Glapa\, Leslie Green Guilbault\, Karl Heerdt\, C.J. Hurley\, Rixford Jennings\, Thomas Kegler\, Howard Lehning\, Julie Leidel\, Suzanne Mair\, Dorothy Markert\, Janice McDuffy\, James Miller\, Christie Schorf-Miller\, Thomas Pafk\, Ann PerrySmith\, Peter Potter\, Alburn Sleeper\, Yvonne Stoklosa\, Robert Trout\, Ronald VanOstrand\, Kathleen West\, and Laura Wilder. \n“Fifty Years of RALA acknowledges the artistic contributions by RALA artists to the WNY art canon and local art history over the past fifty years of careful attention to excellence\, and we are so grateful to the Burchfield Penney for their support and in recognizing the work of the Roycroft Renaissance artists in such a way\, says RALA Executive Director Tami Fuller. “We are terribly excited for this to open to the public and grateful to the Burchfield for their discerning eye in the curation of this exhibit. It’s an inspiring range of work.” \nFifty Years of RALA opened to the public on M&T Second Friday at the Burchfield Penney\, October 9th\, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. with live music by Buffalo guitarist and songwriter Vin DeRosa\, and all-ages art-making. \nAbout Fifty Years of RALA:\n\n\nThe Roycroft\, which was established in 1895 by aspiring author and orator Elbert Hubbard\, would eventually become one of the most prominent utopian Arts and Crafts communities in the country.  It prospered throughout the Teens and Twenties\, until the economic impact of the Great Depression and evolving consumer tastes forced its closure in 1938. \nIn 1972\, Princeton University’s exhibition The Arts and Crafts Movement in America\, 1876-1916\, triggered a renewed nationwide appreciation for Arts and Crafts\, which led its subsequent revival.  Prior to this\, some individuals had vague recollections of what Roycroft once was.  Sure\, most knew you could enjoy a delicious meal at the Roycroft Inn\, which had catered to dinner guests for decades after the demise of Roycroft.  But what really occurred at this now decaying campus? \nIn 1976\, a group of prominent local artists\, historians\, and collectors sought to revitalize interest in the campus\, its founder\, and its craftspeople.  This formative group included Nancy Hubbard Brady (Elbert Hubbard’s granddaughter)\, Charles Hamilton\, Rixford Jennings\, and Kitty Turgeon. Soon it would include Dr. Edna Lindemann\, founding director of the Burchfield Penney Art Center. While the Renaissance became the purveyor of Roycroft history\, education\, and stabilization\, the Roycrofters-At-Large-Association or RALA was tasked with identifying contemporary artisans who were committed to Elbert Hubbard’s original mantra – to use one’s head\, heart\, and hand to yield their finest work.  Artist Rixford Jennings designed a modern version of the famous Roycroft logo for use by the artisans; this time with a back-to-back double “R” to denote Roycroft Renaissance. Since its inception\, the quality has always been unmistakably “Roycrofty”. \nThrough the years\, hundreds of artisans have shared this distinction. Many have been elevated to the status of Master Artisan in the mediums employed at the Roycroft more than a century ago. Summer and Winter festivals are staged in East Aurora to bring this cohesive “community” together\, along with numerous regional and national festivals and Arts and Crafts conferences. Collaboration is also a mainstay of RALA\, in much the same way as the original Roycrofters participated in cross-departmental initiatives.  Several examples are featured here. \nToday we [Burchfield Penney] celebrate this milestone anniversary by highlighting a selection of work created by current and former RALA artisans. DESCRIPTION:The Buffalo History Museum and the Roycrofters at Large Association present “Carrying the Craft Forward: The Roycroft Renaissance” in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the founding the Roycrofters-at-Large and its landmark conservation and preservation work to re-establish the Historic Roycroft Campus of East Aurora in 1976. \nCarrying the Craft Forward opens to the public on Friday\, October 16 and is on view through May 9\, 2027\, offering items of historical interest\, records\, ephemera and documents dating from period Roycroft canon together with the earliest days of RALA and the conservation work on South Grove. This exhibition\, assembled under the careful attention of Anthony Greco\, Director of Exhibits & Interpretive Planning and Roycrofters-at-Large Past President and Chairman of the RALA50 Anniversary & Archive committee Michael Starks\, with the assistance of Sandy Starks\, RALA Executive Director Tami Fuller and Robb Mair\, fellow Board of Director and member of the RALA50 committee. SUMMARY:40th National Arts & Crafts Conference: Annual Goodie Draw at GPI 2027
DESCRIPTION:The final showing and drawing for the winner of the 2026-2027 RALA Goodie Box will take place on January 10\, 2027 at the 40th Annual National Arts & Crafts Conference at the Omni Grove Park Inn in Asheville\, North Carolina. \nOmni Grove Park Inn\, Asheville\, N.C. omnihotels.com/hotels/asheville-grove-park \nWhat is the Goodie Box? \nThe annual Goodie Box is a RALA tradition for over 20 years\, originally created as a homage to Elbert Hubbard’s famous “Goodie\,” and is wildly popular with members and collectors as the backbone of RALA’s non-profit fund-raising initiatives. Besides containing an astonishing variety of items from Roycroft Artisans\, each year’s box has a centerpiece created by a select Roycroft Master. Tickets are sold throughout the year with a final drawing at the National Arts and Crafts Conference\, at the Grove Park Inn in Asheville\, NC. Winner takes all.   \nTypically held in February\, this year’s conference will take place in January\, to accommodate renovations to the hotel. Drawing for this year’s Goodie Box will be at 3 p.m. on January 10\, 2027. \nThe centerpiece of the 50th Anniversary Goodie Box is a functional piece of art designed by Roycroft Master Artisan Thomas Pafk. Primarily designed as a Blanket Chest lined with unfinished aromatic cedar with proportions suited to the meet the needs of a foyer bench\, it can serve as artful storage or the centerpiece of any domestic space. Measuring 28″ w x 14″d x 16″h\, it is constructed of quarter-sawn white oak and walnut with bookmatched walnut burl panels.The lid\, adorned with the commemorative 50th anniversary seal and finished with Aurora Amber dye and catalyzed lacquer dull-rubbed top coat\, opens to any angle using lid stay torsion hinges. Custom handmade leather handles by Roycroft Artisan Tom Ciminelli complete the fine touch finishing and continue the tradition of collaboration among the Roycroft Artisanship. Together with this piece\, the 2026 Goodie Box contains additional items created by Roycroft Artisans and Master Artisans valued at over $8\,000 with contributions by: \nAndre M.
